What is a Football Academy? If you regularly attend junior grassroots football matches, you’ll often hear phrases like “he’s an academy player” or ‘“he used to be at an academy’” or “he should be playing at an academy”’ or “he was released from an academy”. But in case you are

🎯 Top 5 Tips for New Grassroots Coaches (from someone who’s aged 10 years in 2 seasons) ⚽😅
1. Be ready to answer 47 questions before you’ve zipped your coat up.
“Are we home or away?” “Do we have bibs?” “Can my child go in goal even though they cried last time?” Welcome to your new full-time admin job.
2. Forget tactics – you’re really managing snacks, moods, and lost shin pads.
You can spend 2 hours prepping a pressing drill, or you can spend 2 hours explaining why Timmy can’t wear his Spider-Man socks instead of kit.
3. Parents will say, “It’s all about fun,” right before demanding to know why you didn’t play 4-3-3.
Fun is great… unless their kid was subbed for 8 minutes. Then it’s “What’s your long-term development pathway plan?”
4. Always pretend you know what you’re doing.
Stare thoughtfully at the pitch, cross your arms, nod occasionally. Bonus points if you shout “press!” at random intervals.
5. You will never leave the pitch clean, dry, or mentally unscathed.
Rain, mud, emotional trauma — it’s all part of the badge.
